Testing, testing 1, 2, 3 - Rational pathology testing in general practice

Why did I order this test? And what on earth does it mean?

Pathology tests play an essential role in the diagnosis, monitoring and screening for disease in general practice. And, perhaps not surprisingly, the use of pathology tests is increasing in Australia and internationally.

But while much of this increase is appropriate, a growing body of evidence suggests that non-rational testing is a significant problem, with major consequences for the patient, doctor and health system.

Introducing 'Testing, testing 1, 2, 3', a multi-format educational program designed to support GPs to use pathology tests more effectively, and reduce the harms of non-rational test ordering. Go to the education activities

Aims

The aims of the program are to:

  • Educate GPs on the range of influences on test ordering behaviour.
  • Reinforce the potential costs, adverse effects and harms of inappropriate test ordering.
  • Support GPs to apply strategies for rational use of pathology tests in clinical practice.

Format

'Testing, testing 1, 2, 3' is a multimedia education program including a variety of activities. You can choose to do just one activity or complete them all.

  • Self-paced e-learning
  • Live webinars
  • Practice-based education activities
  • Podcasts
  • Supporting reference material
  • Community of practice/discussion forum

Audience

The education is targeted at GPs, medical educators, GP supervisors and GP registrars.

Project Funding

This education is funded by the Department of Health Quality Use of Pathology Program (QUPP). QUPP was established to support the pathology sector in the pursuit of continued improvements and to encourage innovation in pathology related practices, amongst requesters/referrers, providers and consumers of pathology services.

We do not set out to tell GPs what to do. General practice is a challenging and complex discipline, and there are multiple factors that influence whether pathology testing is appropriate. The decision to test is between a GP and the patient. We simply aim to give GPs additional knowledge and skills to support the rational use of pathology tests in the day-to-day care of patients.
