This article will give you tips on why to blog, how to blog and what kind of blog you might want to write.
You will be connecting with your fellow Registrars. Blogging allows you to connect on up to date information or issues in the workplace. You might wish to share information about a useful resources, ask questions about how to handle unusual circumstance or share exam tips.
Think about two things:
Audience: Ask yourself, “Who am I reaching out to and what are their interests and needs?” Remember, if you are trying to start a conversation, don’t dominate it – ask for input, you want this to be two-way.
Topic: Ask yourself, “what is new, unusual, unique or different about what I have to say?” You want people to read what you write, so give a thought to not being run-of-the-mill.
Here are some other tips:
Keep it short... 200 - 600 words
Use short paragraphs, headings, lists, bold, italics – anything that makes your blog easy to read. Long slabs of text will turn your readers off if they are only intending to glance at ‘what’s new’ on the board.
Use a clear, concise hook (headline and opening) – be captivating.
Be clear on your own viewpoint if you are writing an opinion piece.
Images give a good point of reference for a conversation – upload a photo with your blog article.
Encourage your readers to share personal experiences – ask: “What have you found….?” or “Have you ever had a patient who…?” or “Should doctors ever…?” Questions create vibrant conversations.
Be ready to add more of your insights to the conversation later on. You don’t need to put it all in your first post.
If you are providing an opinion, or where you want to discuss something controversial, citing other expert opinions or latest medical research or trends will help your credibility with readers.
We all benefit from interaction with our peers. Get involved. Write a blog about:
What’s new in medical news – latest research, a current event. Give your views or ask how it might translate into practice or help your work-life.
You might have an area of particular expertise – share insights or information.
Have you come across an excellent resource? A ‘cheat sheet’ that digests confusing information clearly? Share the ‘quick and easy’ tips that make your life better.
Perhaps you have found some graphics or a short videos that are invaluable? Post them up.
