Suicide Prevention Online???

29 August 2015 - Dr Jan Ormans

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIWH) report into causes of death in Australia contained good news and bad news. The good news was that our children and grandchildren born between 2011 and 2013 can expect to live to over 80, even the boys. But the bad news is that some of us will die between 15 and 44 and the most likely cause will be suicide.

I don’t think I am likely to be alone in finding that much more disturbing than older people dying of chronic diseases.

We need to work hard and find better tools to help prevent suicide.

A great deal of work is being done developing online suicide prevention tools and resources including here at the Black Dog Institute. If you go to the Institute website  http://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/public/research/suicideprevention.cfm you will see that there are two very interesting projects.

The Healthy Thinking trial is currently recruiting people between 18 and 64 who are experiencing suicidal thoughts into a six week online suicide prevention program and i-bobbly, an app for i-phone and i-pad developed in collaboration with the indigenous people of the Kimberley region, which aims to increase resilience and reduce suicidal thinking in indigenous people.

What do you think? Is it possible that online programs aimed at suicide prevention will be effective?
