Things have changed at THIS WAY UP

26 February 2016 - Dr Jan Ormans

If you haven’t seen it yet take a minute to explore the new look This Way Up website.

It’s easy to read and navigate and introduces some changes to the way the This Way Up Courses work.

The first big change is that the self help courses can now be accessed without a prescription or referral from a GP or other mental health clinician. Of course, a prescription number given by the patient’s prescribing clinician and entered at the time of enrolment will ensure that the clinician is kept in the loop with regular contact from the This Way Up Clinic about their patient’s progress, but it is no longer mandatory. Whether self-help or clinician supervised the courses cost just under $60.00 and are now available via an android mobile app and next month on an i-phone mobile app as well as the usual way on a desktop via the website.

This is what the This Way Up team have to say about the results of their depression program:

On average, most people benefit a little from each lesson completed. 80% of people who complete all lessons benefit substantially, 50% to the point of no longer being troubled by depression. 20% do not benefit and will need to seek further assistance.

This Way Up won’t necessarily suit all your patients and, yes, there are cheaper options, but as these courses have a substantial evidence base it is worth taking a look. The new website provides detailed information about the content of each of the modules (for example if you scroll down the 'I feel sad' page you can see the details of the depression course) but unfortunately you still have to enrol to actually see inside the course itself.

This is where you can register as a referring clinician.
