Some Great Online Learning Opportunities You May Not Know About

07 July 2016 - Dr Jan Ormans

If you've completed the eMHPrac online learning modules you may already be a convert to the joys of online learning.

One of the big advantages of online learning is that it allows you to undertake training that is held too far away to attend in the flesh. That is certainly true for most of us with regard to the trainings offered by the Werry Centre.

- The Werry Centre is New Zealand’s national centre for child and adolescent mental health based at the University of Auckland and led by Child and Adolescent psychiatrist Professor Sally Merry. It offers online courses in assessment of children and adolescents with mental health conditions, foundations in infant child and adolescent mental health and integrated care where mental health problems in young people co-exist with substance abuse. Here’s the link to those courses http://www.werrycentre.org.nz/elearning-courses

- Also highly recommended is the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders’ online learning for GPs and other health professionals caring for patients with eating disorders. You can find it in the health professionals section of the CEDD website http://cedd.org.au/health-professionals/  or go directly to the login at http://moodle.cedd.org.au/login/index.php . It costs $280 everywhere in Australia except Victoria where access is free. It is well worth the investment.

- Last but not least, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs offers four excellent online courses for clinicians: Understanding the Military Experience, Case Formulation, Working with Veterans with Mental Health Issues and PTSD – Psychological Interventions Program. These are available free of charge and can be accessed at http://at-ease.dva.gov.au/professionals/professional-development/

Don’t forget, if courses do not already have accreditation from your college you can always apply to have them credited to your ongoing professional education tally through the self-directed learning option eg https://www.racgp.org.au/education/qicpd-program/gps/self-directed-learning/
