Online Self-help Resources on Body Image and Eating Disorders - Centre for Clinical Interventions WA

13 October 2015 - Dr Jan Ormans

The core psychopathology of Eating Disorders involves an overvaluation of control over weight, shape and eating. The leading evidence-based treatment for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder is cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) or its enhanced version, CBT-E. Whilst there is not yet a gold standard treatment for anorexia nervosa, CBT-E has also been found to be effective with anorexia nervosa. The Centre for Clinical Interventions (CCI) has created a double set of website modules, Overcoming Disordered Eating A and B, based on enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy for eating disorders: http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resources/infopax.cfm?Info_ID=48

Those with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) tend to overestimate the likelihood that others will respond to their appearance in a negative manner, underestimate their ability to cope if this did occur and discount any information which suggests otherwise. CCI’s website modules, Building Body Acceptance, address these issues using evidence-supported CBT interventions: http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resources/infopax.cfm?Info_ID=55
