Do you need Supervision in your mental health work but don't know where to get it?

01 March 2016 - Dr Jan Ormans

If you're doing a lot of mental health work in primary care you may be wishing you had some supervision. I know from my own experience how much the work can get on top of you. I really recommend getting good supervision.  It will help you do the best job for your patients and contribute to your own survival.

I know it’s often difficult to find face to face supervision but I’ve found two things that might be helpful for you to know about:

  • University of Sydney’s Centre for Continuing Education is offering online supervision for health professionals in partnership with the Medical School’s Discipline of Psychiatry.  It looks like a really good idea for people who are unable for reasons of time or geography to access face to face supervision. It’s $396 for 6 hours supervision over 90 days. If you’re not sure it’s for you it’s possible to join the monthly webinars as a guest for free to get a taste of what online supervision is all about. For more information go to Mental Health Clinical Supervision Online webpage.

  • Another option is to attend Balint Groups by teleconference. There is information about groups with places available now on the website of the Balint Society of Australia and New Zealand.   Balint Groups are great value for GPs and less intense than formal supervision. They have been shown to improve GPs wellbeing as well as improve their practice, whether or not they are working with a heavy mental health load.
