You are probably aware of the formal safety planning strategies used with people at risk of suicide. Safety planning involves identifying warning signs, increasing the safety of the environment, developing strategies to help at risky times and identifying reasons to live. The trouble with a safety plan is that it is not a lot of use if you can’t find it when you need it or it is at home in your bedside drawer.
BeyondNow was developed collaboratively by beyondblue and Monash University with funding from the Movember Foundation. It provides a convenient smartphone-based way to develop and retain a safety plan. It is easy to use, includes suggestions for helpful strategies in times of crisis and quick easily accessible links to help lines. The app is free of charge but does require an operating system (iOS) of 8.0 or later. If that prevents you from downloading it to your phone you can still use the app on your computer by downloading it from the website. As someone who has practiced medicine for almost four decades I have had the opportunity to observe firsthand the upsurge in the use of opioid pain killers in non-cancer pain.
