BDI Case Study

The client

Black Dog Institute is an independent not-for-profit medical research institute affiliated with UNSW Sydney. Their aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone.

The partnership

Since 2014, Medcast has partnered with Black Dog Institute to support the e-Mental Health in Practice (“eMHPrac”) Project, a federally-funded project aimed at promoting the use of e-Mental Health Programs to health professionals.

Black Dog Institute approached Medcast for an innovative method to introduce Australian Health Professionals to a range of online mental health treatment programs. The aim was to increase the knowledge and uptake of the programs and to improve the confidence of health professionals in using these programs in practice.

What we did

Medcast worked with Black Dog Institute to design and implement a suite of online education activities about e-Mental health to engage time-poor GPs and other clinicians.

The solution was an integrated learning hub with access to education (webinars & elearning), blogs, case studies, a community of practice, tools and resources. Health Professional participation was tracked and participants surveyed, for CPD points and program evaluation.

Services included:

Health Professional Engagement
Learning Design and Development
Community of Practice
Education Hosting
Marketing

The impact

The eMHPrac project has proven extremely successful in overcoming the challenges of educating GP and other health professionals across Australia in current treatments of e-Mental health.

Over 25,600 individuals have participated in eMHPrac learning and the Mental Health Community of Practice.  The outcomes include a significant increase in clinician knowledge of and confidence using digital mental health tools.

25,600 TOTAL CLINICIANS REACHED
6,500 COMMUNITY MEMBERS
61,000 TOTAL COURSE ENROLMENTS

The accolades

This project received accolades at the 2017 LearnX Awards in the Category: Learning & Capability Project. The project was awarded a Platinum Award for Best Social/Collaborative Project.

The following quotes from learners illustrate the prevailing view: namely that the platform delivers quality content in an intuitive and social environment:

This has been the best online learning exercise I have ever done and superbly constructed… just what I have been looking for. [The eMH programs are] already in use. Thank you.

I am incredibly impressed with the credentials of my peers on this network and excited at the possibility of connecting with others with a passion for mental health issues.

Having access to free quality education in the form of eLearning modules, expert opinion blogs and live/recorded webinars, such as those found in the eMHPrac Community, is of great advantage to health professionals trying to navigate their way through the burgeoning field of e-Mental Health.
